After 34 years of being on the air from Shelby County, Alabama, the EWTN Global Catholic Network has said it is taking WEWN off the air, saying listenership had diminished and the costs were too high to keep the station going with its aging equipment.
The Radio World website carried news of the announcement made on the 31st of October. The station has been heard on 12.050 MHz and 15.610 MHz but has reduced its operating hours recently. It provided programs in English for listeners mainly in the Middle East and Africa and programs in Spanish to Latin America.
Meanwhile in Maine, the assets of the shortwave superstation WBCQ-The Planet are being offered for lease or for sale. Those assets include a 500-kilowatt Continental transmitter, a 360-degree rotatable antenna, a 2-megawatt generator and 3,000 square foot transmitter and studio building, according to a report in DX World. The station transmits on 7.490 MHz, 9.330 MHz, 5.130 MHz, and 3.265 MHz, offering brokered programming in the spirit of supporting free speech.
