The Jackson County Amateur Radio Club in Alabama will soon have a new tower to help it continue to fulfill its mission of public service. County commissioners have approved a proposal by county emergency management agency director Joshua Whitcomb to donate the surplus tower to the ham club. He told the commission that it wasn't worthwhile for the county to take on $30,000 worth of repairs that the tower needs. The tower has already been taken down and the club would need to transport it to their headquarters.
The tower is being viewed as a useful addition to the club's network to support the county's emergency backup communications. County attorney John Porter told the commission that he approved the donation because the tower would be used for emergency notification and public safety..
The club's website notes that a big part of the mission of Jackson County ARES is to coordinate during disasters with the emergency management agency and other public service agencies.
